Duo Murtola&Widenius: Piedras en el río

Finnish Flamenco duo’s debut album combines Nordic folklore with intense rhythms of flamenco

On the newly released Estrella del Norte album, northern melancholy meets the intense rhythms of Spanish flamenco, the most profound flamenco styles meet Finnish folklore. Behind it all is a two friends' shared journey with flamenco music, spanning over two decades.

The North as a guiding star

On the flamenco duo's album, northern melancholy meets the intense rhythms of flamenco, and its most profound styles are counterbalanced by influences from Finnish folklore. The album's name “Estrella del Norte” is Spanish for Northern Star. Singer Anna Murtola talks about the process of making the first single and music video from the album: “Last spring, I became familiar with the lyrics of the collection of ancient Finnish poetry, “The Kanteletar” and noticed that old Finnish poems and songs contain very similar themes to those in flamenco: sadness, defiance, love… I was inspired to translate the old Finnish texts into Spanish and adapt them to the flamenco framework.”  As a result, the song “Piedras en el río” (Stones in the river) was born. It was released as a music video on YouTube in January, 2025.

The album also features, among other things, a flamenco interpretation of the ancient Finnish poem Raudan synty (Origins of Iron) that can be found from the Finnish national epic The Kalevala. Although both artists have a solid knowledge of the tradition and techniques of traditional Spanish flamenco, both mention that it is important to bring their own background to flamenco. “The cultural environment in which we live and breathe inevitably influences our creative processes. As long as we are open-minded and do not consciously close ourselves off from their influences. Scandinavian melodies and harmonies have always been close to my heart, so they come naturally into everything I do,” says guitarist Joonas Widenius.
